I am always looking for ways to save money and be energy efficient, especially in the summer when the days are longer and it is light outside later. l love that my family can get unplug, get outside and not be tied to the electronics inside our house.
In fact, we belong to a local lake so we often spend our nights there, swimming and playing with our friends until it is too dark to see. The kids like to play frisbee, or just run around with glow sticks playing tag while the adults get to sit back and enjoy the peace and quiet living in the country allows us.
Living in the country however, means it get dark–I mean really dark since we don’t have streetlights so I have to make sure that I have proper lighting outside of my house. We try to remember to turn off the outside spotlights when we go to bed at night but more often than not we would forget, which meant that we were leaving our spotlights off of our front and back porch on all night light. That affected our electricity bill and we were paying for lighting that we didn’t need or even want.
Here are some great ways to save money on your electricity bill:
- Floodlights or patio lights with motion sensors or automatic daylight sensors are great for both security and energy savings.
- Use timers for decorative lighting-especially around holidays for holiday lighting.
- Use bulbs and lighting that are ENERGY STAR rating to maximize your energy savings
- Using LED bulbs or fluorescent lighting can help you use up to 75-80% less energy, plus they last longer than traditional bulbs.
My husband and I decided that we wanted to replace our old floodlights with new energy efficient lighting so we headed to our local Home Depot to check out what they offered. We ended up purchasing a motion sensor adapter that screws right into our existing floodlight. The one that we chose can detect motion up to 30 ft away and it then activates the light for 10 minutes. After the 10 minutes is up then it shuts itself off. According to the packaging it will save us up to 80% annually on our energy costs.
We also grabbed a bright white LED replacement bulb for the floodlight, which has a 10 year (yes, 10 YEAR) warranty, which over the lifetime of the bulb should translate into energy savings of almost $200. That’s an awesome savings!
Make sure to take some time this summer to unplug and get outside with your kids. It doesn’t have to be hard to enjoy the outdoors, its just needs to be fun. So grab some glow sticks, grab a flashlight and play some tag or just sit on your porch and enjoy a special treat. The kids also love when they get to enjoy special treats like Pop Couture, which are yummy hand crafted, organic ice pops.I’m sure you won’t regret it!
