For those of you who don’t live in NEPA when you hear Scranton what do you think of ? The Office? The Huffington Post article on the 10 Offbeat reasons to Make Scranton your Next Mini-Vacation? Well I think of home and of all the great family friendly things to do in Scranton.
Now that the weather is warming up, it is a great time to get out and explore our area and its attractions that are geared towards families so here are my Top 5 Things to Do in Scranton with Kids.
1. Take in a Railriders game–my family loves to go to the Railriders games. The new facility is top notch, with attention given to every detail making it a true family friendly destination. At the back of the field is the Fun Zone, which for a small fee your child can jump and play to their hearts content on numerous inflatable slides and play games. I love that the concourse is a full circle so I can just walk around the field with my daughter in the stroller and still see the entire game. There are also lots of fun, kid focused events on the schedule so make sure to check the Railriders schedule out!
2. the Everhart Museum–this museum is always a fun time for my kids. We always start our visit in the Rock Room then move on to see Dinosaur bones and fossils and then to the Natural History Collection. This is a huge room filled with more than 2,000 animal specimens on display. It is a creepy yet cool way to get up close with some amazing animals! The Everhart Museum also offers classes, summer camps and programs for kids of all ages so make sure to check out the Everhart website for details.
3. Steamtown National Historic site– Have a kid who loves trains? Then you must make sure to visit Steamtown! Steamtown is run by the National Park Service and features working trains and trains on display. You can participate in tours of the facility, get up close and personal with the trains and you can even take a scenic ride through the countryside on a Steamtown excursion train. Visiting Steamtown is a great way to help make steam history come alive for your kids!
4. Lackawana Coal Mine Tour–This area was built on coal mines–literally! Explore the rich history of the coal mining industry in NEPA by traveling 300 feet underground and touring an actual coal mine. What better way to learn about the conditions our NEPA ancestors lived through and worked in day after day? Talk about bringing history to life! Make sure to put the Coal Mine Tour on your list of things to do this summer!
5. Take a Trolley ride– Trolleys used to be the main mode of transportation and you can now relive the old days by taking a Trolley ride! This is a fun way to spend the afternoon and the Trolley museum is very informative and fun for kids of all ages. You can even pair up a Trolley ride with a baseball game for their Baseball excursions. No matter what Trolley excursion you chose, it is sure to be a fun time!
So that’s it! This is my Top 5 Things to do with Families in Scranton but there are many more fun things to do! Next time you are looking for something to do with the family make sure to check out one of these fun attractions and if you are visiting from out of town I hope you enjoy your visit!

I’ve never been to your area, but I plan to do a roadtrip at some point and would love to include Scranton. It seems like it was quite a part of the industrial revolution with all the train and coal mines? Must be a fascinating history. Thanks for sharing about your city! 😀
