Keeping Kids Teeth Healthy during the Holiday’s

My kids eat fairly healthy–I’m lucky that they love fruits and veggies–but during the Holidays all bets are off! First there is Halloween, then we have two birthdays, our annual trip to Hershey PA, Thanksgiving and finally Christmas.  It is candy, cake, more candy, pies…well you get the idea!  As a result we are especially careful to be mindful of our dental heath during the Holidays.  Who wants to deal with a cavity during the Holidays? Not me!  So, I have come up with some tips for Keeping Kids Teeth Healthy during the Holiday’s to share with you.

Limit sugar as much as possible–I know, this can be a tough one but try.  If you do have to have some treats then chose wisely. My dentist always told me that it was better to eat candy that is chocolate based instead of sugar based because it washes off your teeth easier.

Limit gummy snacks and raisins–again, this advice came directly from my dentist. Did you know that gummy snacks and raisins stick  in between kids teeth?  They then can cause cavities between teeth because they are hard to brush away.

Don’t drink soda or at least save it for special treats–Studies show that kids who drink 3 or more sugary sodas a day have 62% more dental problems like dental decay, fillings and tooth loss.

Make brushing fun!  If you make anything fun then kids want to do it right?  I like to use the Firefly Ready Go Traffic Light with my preschooler.  It is the #1 selling manual brush and has timed lighting so that Green means GO, Yellow means almost done and Red means Done so your child knows exactly how long to brush.
