How to Freeze Corn–Great way to save money

09/28/14 | Uncategorized

One of the ways I save money on my foods bill during the winter is to stock up on family favorites from the Farmer’s Market and freeze them to use all winter long.  It is so convenient to be able to just head to my freezer and pull out farm fresh food all year long. It saves me both time and money and I love know that my family is getting food that was grown locally and lovingly by farmers in my communities.  (Scroll to the bottom to learn how to freeze corn, blueberries, green peppers and more!)

However, often when I tell people that I stock up and save food to use during the winter they inevitably ask how to freeze certain items and whether or not it changes the texture of the food or the taste.  Truthfully, the freezing process does change the texture of many foods but they still work great in prepared dishes.

One of my favorite foods and truthfully the easiest is to freeze corn.  My kids love corn, and this time of year corn is at its freshest and the taste cannot be beat. Plus it is really economical to purchase corn right now.

How to Freeze Corn

How to Freeze Corn

Here are the instructions on how to freeze corn.

1. Purchase corn that is fresh from your local Farmer’s Market or grocery store

2. Peel corn and rinse so that no silky strands remain.

3. Carefully cut corn from the cob by standing the corn up on its end and slicing downwards.

4. Freeze corn in freezer safe Ziploc Bags.

5. When ready to eat, take desired amount of corn from the bag and place in a skillet.  Add butter and salt and simmer over low heat for 10 minutes until the corn has released its starch and has softened.

Enjoy!

We have several farms nearby and the corn is now dirt cheap. Thank you for showing me how to freeze it and save money. My family loves corn too!

This seems simple enough. Silly me for not trying this years before. Thanks for sharing.
