I was recently invited to a friends house for a party and I knew that I wanted to take a treat with me when I went. The question is, what do you take to a food bloggers house? I mean, lets me honest, lots of pressure there! I knew it wasn’t the time for something new, I didn’t want to take any chances that the recipe wouldn’t work so I decided that I wanted to take a family favorite, tried and true dessert and that meant one thing…Hershey Cocoa Bars with Creamy Frosting!
My mom has made these Bars for years and they are always a huge hit when she does. My entire family, including my kids, love them and they are super simple to make. Plus, since you frost them when they are warm you can make then at the last minute–no waiting for the cake to cool first.

These Hershey Cocoa Bars with Creamy Frosting are easy to make and can be frosted when warm so they are a great last minute treat!
- Cake Ingredients:
- ½ cup Butter
- 2 tsp Vanilla
- 2 C Sugar
- 4 eggs
- ½ c milk
- 2 c flour (sifted)
- 4 tbsp cocoa
- ½ tsp salt
- Frosting Ingredients:
- 4 tsp cocoa
- 3 tsp milk
- ¾ tsp vanilla
- 4 tsp butter
- 2 c confectioners sugar
- Please note: You can add more sugar if needed, just adjust the amount of milk to make the icing the desired consistency.
- Cream butter to soften. Add sugar and vanilla, creaming well. Beat in eggs one at a time. Stir in milk and sift together dry ingredients. Stir dry ingredients into creamed mixture.
- Frosting:
- Mix all ingredients together. Frost bars when slightly cooled but still warm.
- Bake bars at 375 degrees for 30-35 minutes.
The Hershey Cocoa Bars with Creamy Frosting were a hit at the party, just like I knew they would be! Everyone asked if they are a cake or a brownie and the best way to describe them is they have a heavier feel than a cake.
I love these Hershey Cocoa Bars with Creamy Frosting and I will be making them for my family again soon!
I could just taste these with a side of vanilla ice cream.
Oh my they look delicious! I never put frosting on brownie bars – but I will give it a go with my next batch.
Yummy! You can’t go wrong with chocolate. Are they heavier than a brownie?
They are heavier than cake but not as dense as a brownie…does that make sense, lol? They really are very yummy!
Chocolate and I have a love hate relationship! These look fantastic!
Thanks for stopping by! Let me know if you like them!
The frosting looks almost like a candy coating on top– looks great!
I love anything Hershey’s and not just because I live an hour away. Thanks for sharing this recipe, Megan. I am definitely going to make it soon!
