The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting cooler and all of a sudden my kids have Halloween on their minds!
For kids, Halloween is all about having fun but as parents we have to worry about how to keep our kids safe during the festivities.
When you think about it, Halloween goes against everything we tell our kids every other night of the year…don’t walk in the dark, don’t go to strange houses, don’t walk on the road but on Halloween night we do all of those things!
With the following Halloween Child Safety Tips in mind, we can all head out and have some a frightfully good time!
Halloween Safety Tips
- Make sure that your child’s costume can easily been seen in the dark, and if it can’t be make sure they are wearing reflective shoe wear and carrying
- Follow the rules of the road by walking on the sidewalks in well-lit areas, using cross walks when available and checking for cars by stopping, looking and listening before crossing the road.
- Make sure to only visit homes where you know the homeowners.
- Instead of having your child wear a mask why not paint their or if they must absolutely wear a mask, have them remove it when walking from house to house to ensure their safety.
- Make sure to check over their tricks and treats before they eat them to make sure that all is safe, properly wrapped and free of potential allergens and choking hazards.
- Children under 12 should be supervised while trick-or-treating by a parent or other responsible adult.
Have a frightfully good time!

As parents we need to make sure that kids are safe while enjoying Halloween. Never let them go alone or to strangers houses

There always seems to be more to concern year to year. But, we adjust and take precautions- we have to! When I was my son’s age, 4th grade, I went house to house with my BFF alone. There is no way, I’d feel comfortable doing that today. Light colored clothing, glow sticks, flashlights, loads of supervision- joining other families going door-to-door can still be loads of fun.

Good reminders for staying safe Megan – I think we often forget when making or buying costumes that our kids need to be seen in the dark as well as look spooky!
