I admit, my life is busy, but you know what? So are the lives of many of my mom friends and you know why? It’s all because of the choices we make for our families.
I often talk about how my older four are all competitive swimmers and its true, during the Fall and Winter sports season we log a lot of hours on the pool deck for swim practices and swim meets. My whole family loves the sport, and I love how I have watched them blossom over the years into strong and confident swimmers. However, swimming isn’t their only sport, they are also golfers so during the warmer months they (we) spend hours on the course, practicing their shots, playing in tournaments and having fun with their friends.
That means year round we are on the go, grabbing meals at odd times and spending hours poolside, on the course whatever our little athletes are choosing to do.
Why do we do it? Why do we do sports that take up so much of our precious family time? We do it for our athletes so that they have the opportunity to do what they love, excel at what they are good at and get some great exercise while doing it.
My son, who is almost 13, has been swimming for years. It started because I wanted him to know how to swim since my parents live on a lake. I needed to know that if he feel off the dock he could save himself. And you know what happened? Not only did he learn to swim but he learned that he could excel at it. Over the years, I have watched him transition from a little boy who wore a bubble in the water to a strong confident swimmer who this year qualified for district swimming in six events.
Where will all this swimming take him? No ones knows, only he can decide, that but I love to watch him swim, see the enjoyment he gets from it and know that my goal of making him able to save himself if he feel off the dock has been met tenfold.
And THAT is why we do what we do.
