I grew up in a family that camped. My grandparents owned a motorhome and we would often go camping with them or would go tent camping. Eventually my parents bought a pop-up trailer and we went on many awesome adventures to designations all over the United States–with Yellowstone National Park being my absolute favorite.
Some of my happiest childhood memories are of sitting around a campfire with my parents while camping. I was fortunate to grow up with parents who liked to travel and we would often take off on weekend adventures and as a result, saw tons of historical attractions, went to Disney a few times and just spent quality family time together while sleeping in a tent and a pop-up camper.
It was great growing up and getting to travel, and since we often tried to visit destinations that were historical I got to visit placesthat most people only read about in books or see on TV. I loved being able to “learn” about people and places by actually being there, not just learning about it in school or in a dry textbook.
My husband did not grow up camping but he also loves to experience new places and and loves to visit historical attractions as well. A few years ago my parents, my husband and I and our kids all went to Gettysburg for the weekend. My husband, kids and I stayed in a tent but my parents–who had no desire to sleep on the ground!– ended up staying in a cabin in the campground. It was fabulous! It had a bathroom, a kitchen and actual beds…it was a great way to “camp” without having to rough it!
I loved it so much that I am planning on traveling this summer with my husband and kids and we are looking for places that offer these cabins so that we can be comfortable while experiencing all the fun that camping offers, like nature, raging campfires and of course, S’mores!
